Abstract

With almost 100% participation, old and young alike, the first community drill in Mainit, Surigao del Norte, was a great success. Government, community and volunteers actively played a role in a “real- life” scenario, which included the swelling of the lake, river flooding and landslide. Mainit is very prone to various disasters including typhoons, landslides and massive river flooding, which are further aggravated by the destruction of the environment through rampant mining activities and illegal logging. An important strategy in increasing communities’ resilience is to better prepare and timely evacuate the community out of harm’s way, to minimize, or alleviate the number of casualties caused by disasters. The drill and simulation was attended by many agencies including government agencies.
